A great book design is built on a number of things: the materials chosen, the content it reflects and the binding that holds it all together. A great redesign is built on all of these things plus paying respect to the source material.

in Paulius Petrauskas’s redesign of the H.G Well’s novel ‘The War of the Worlds’, I feel a great amount of restraint, with colors that are bright but reduced to simple lines that evoke a science fiction vibe. He has also made fantastic use of the french fold, allowing readers to glean new things from the the narrative.

In his own words:

This was final 4th semester project for Editorial Design at Instituto Politécnico do Cávado e Ave in Barcelos, Portugal. Our task was to design the concept, layout, covers and illustrations for H.G. Wells’s The War of the Worlds book one.
